I can obtain and communicate information to describe how data from technologies including telescopes, spectroscopes, satellites, and space probes provide information about objects in the solar system and the Universe. 8.E.4B.5
Content Knowledge Support
- Read and compete interactive science workbook pages 244-249.
Discussion Topics
- What is the best space technology we can use to explore our Solar System? Is the best space technology you choose to explore the Solar System the best way to explore the Universe? Explain why or why not use 2 more specific details from this module.

Additional Exercises & Extensions
(Level 1) Comprehension
- Create a presentation describing how data from technologies provides information about objects in the solar system and universe using this Google Draw TEMPLATE.
- Complete the space technology Quizlet set.
- Complete the Space Technology Google Form.
(Level 2) Application
- Obtain and communicate information to describe how data from each technology has provided information about objects in the Solar System and/or the Universe using this assignment TEMPLATE.
- Pick your favorite planet. Research and report any previous space missions that have been to that planet and classify which type of space technology it is using what you learned during this module.
(Level 3) Analysis
- Complete Picturing Without Seeing SEPUP laboratory and analysis using this lab TEMPLATE.
- Complete Remote Sensing SEPUP investigation using this lab TEMPLATE.
- Research and report which type of space technology has taught us the most about our Solar System and the Universe. Justify your reasoning using at least 3 sources of direct evidence from previous space explorations using that technology.
(Level 4) Evaluation
- Rank each of the following space technologies (telescopes, space probes, satellites, spectroscopes) from most to least beneficial in terms of helping us learn about our Solar System, galaxy and Universe. For each technology research and include at least one source evidence to justify why it is ranked higher or lower than other space technologies.
- Imagine what humanity would be like if we didn't have any space technology. Speculate and discuss using 200-250 words what humanity would be like IF we didn't have any space technology. Research at least 5 different space technologies and what they have taught us to help guide your answer.
(Level 5) Creation
- Create a mission proposal for a mission to one of 4 of Jupiter’s moons. Research the moon, determine the space tools that scientists used to gather the data, design and build a prototype of a lunar rover and settlement, and create an infographic to share all information.
- Research the most current Mars rover. Report what it designed to do and what does it hope to discover? Evaluate it's design and create an upgraded design for a future mission. Explain your new designs structure and function.
Additional Explorations
- Remote sensing data is used to provide information about bodies in space. Review this data to determine how scientists use it to refine our understanding of the Universe.
- One area of current research is the search for exoplanets. Data is collected from a variety of sources to determine the location of planets outside of our solar system. As more accurate data is collected, planets of smaller sizes are being located. Research and summarize some of the more recent exoplanets that have been discovered. What is interesting about them?
Future Learning Connections (9-12)
- Obtain and evaluate information to describe how the use of x-ray, gamma-ray, radio, and visual (reflecting, refracting, and catadioptric) telescopes and computer modeling have increased the understanding of the Universe.
