Planet Earth is approximately 4,000 miles from the surface to the center. Earth is made up of different layers that all have specific conditions and a unique composition.
Mantle
Is a layer of liquid rock between the crust and the outer core. Its mass is 67% of the Earth. It has a thickness of 2,900 kilometers (1,800 miles) making up about 84% of Earth's total volume! The mantle is predominantly solid but behaves as a fluid!? (click here to learn how to make your own oobleck slime to see what I mean)
Asthenosphere
Means "without strength", and is a part of the upper mantle just below the lithosphere about 50 and 120 miles below the surface that is involved in plate tectonic movement.
Topic Tips
- Earth's mantle is the largest layer of Earth and is made up of hot softened rock that is in motion.
