How to Get Started in This Class
Learning always presents its own rewards as well as challenges. These challenges are what help make us grow. Typically, students may have difficulty managing their time, using different technologies, asking questions, or submitting assignments. The following activities will provide tips on how to overcome these challenges.
The first few weeks of class are very important for you to get familiar with how this class will work and for everyone to get to know each other so that we can all have a safe and enjoyable class for the rest of the school year.

Before You Begin Class:
GET FAMILIAR WITH GOOGLE CLASSROOM: Explore Google Classroom (http://classroom.google.com) for your science class: Be sure to visit all areas of the site: Stream, Classwork, People, Grades Course. It is important that you know your way around Google Classroom. Google Classroom will be our online classroom for this class which means it will be the location of everything we do and everything you will need for this class. Click here for a video overview of how to use Google Classroom.
INTRODUCE YOURSELF: Update your Google Classroom profile to include a picture of yourself. Click here for a video tutorial on how to update your Google Classroom profile picture.

During Class:
USE YOUR CLASS TIME WISELY: We all have to attend our classes in order to move on. So, we all have the same amount of time in class. How you use that time will make your life more easy or more difficult. Be sure to use that time we have in class to the best of your ability. This will help ensure your work gets done at school to maximize your overall grades and minimize the time you work outside of class. If you work hard in class you will likely find yourself having no work to do in science outside of class.
SET ASIDE TIME TO WORK ON THE COURSE MODULES EACH DAY: You must allow a regular time and space for working on this class. Obviously the time we have in class is dedicated 100% to completing your science work, but the benefit of this class is its flexibility (you can work on it whenever and from wherever you have access to the Internet, including your phone). But flexibility can also be a trap. So, plan on spending about approximately 20 minutes a day or 100 minutes genuinely doing work for this class every week other than the required class time.
ASK QUESTIONS: Don’t be afraid to let me know if you can’t make something work, don’t know how to do something, or just don’t understand. The best way I can help you is to know exactly what you need. You can always talk to me and/or reach me via e-mail because I frequently check it. [email protected]
PARTICIPATE: Part of your grade will be based on your active, thoughtful contributions in class and during online discussions. Be sure to engage and respect the comments of your classmates—they may have the same questions or give you new ideas. It is a good idea to try and make at least one contribution each time you participate in class whether it's in person or online.
SUBMIT YOUR WORK ON TIME: When you are ready to submit your assignments for each module, make sure to click turn in or mark as done for each assignment submission on Google Classroom. Any assignments turned in after the assigned due date may be subjected to a late penalty or consequence. If you ever need more time email your teacher and ask for extended time before an assignment is due.
USE GOOD "NETIQUETTE:" Use care when interacting online; you don't have the ability to gauge a person's reaction or feelings as you do in a face-to-face conversation. Remember we are all here to help one another be successful. If you ever feel like tearing someone down in this class just don't.
Join in and have fun!
Sincerely,
Carl Clark
